The Nature Climate Standard

Defining the Framework for Measuring Carbon Storage and Biodiversity

A trusted base

The Nature Climate Standard

The Nature Climate Standard provides a comprehensive framework for the measurement, reporting, and verification of carbon storage and biodiversity outcomes through nature-based solutions. Rooted in the principles of ISO 14064-2, it ensures that projects adhere to high standards of environmental integrity, transparency, and governance, while remaining adaptable to incorporate diverse methodological approaches and evolving scientific and regulatory advancements.

Introducing Our First Methodologies

Building the Nature Climate Standard

The first two methodologies to be certified by the Nature Climate Standard are Impact Improved Forest Management (IIFM) and Nature Reserves. They are the successors to the SILVACONSULT Forest Carbon Standard and the "Methodik für Wald-Klimaschutzprojekte in der Schweiz". By harmonising these methodologies under the NCS, we aim to create a unified framework that sets a benchmark for quality in European nature-based solutions, starting with forestry.
Impact Improved Forest Management

IIFM

Impact Improved Forest Management (IIFM)

Impact Improved Forest Management (IIFM) is a certification methodology for sustainable forest management that aligns with the future potential natural vegetation and promotes continuous cover forestry. Its goal is to maximize carbon sequestration and biodiversity by enhancing the stability and resilience of forest stands while reducing abiotic and biotic risks.

NATURE RESERVES

Forest Nature Reserves

Forest Nature Reserves are protected areas that foster the natural development of forest ecosystems by minimizing human intervention. Aimed at enhancing biodiversity and maximizing carbon storage to combat climate change, these reserves support natural regeneration, leading to ecological stability and the preservation of diverse habitats while effectively sequestering carbon.

Accredited Verification Bodies

Approved Verification and Validation Bodies (VVBs) under the Nature Climate Standard must hold recognized accreditation and demonstrate compliance with the Nature Climate Standard. Audit teams bring relevant expertise and maintain a clear process for appeals. Learn more

About NVF

The Nature Value Consortium (NVC) is a collaborative group formed by Tree.ly, Forest Climate Protection Switzerland (WKSS), and SILVACONSULT®, combining their strengths to protect and regenerate ecosystems. NVC enhances CO₂e storage, promotes biodiversity, and supports sustainable climate protection through integrated, nature-based solutions. As the developers of the Nature Climate Standard (NCS), NVC draws on the SILVACONSULT® Forest Carbon Standard and Swiss forestry methodologies to establish a benchmark for high-quality, European nature-based solutions, starting with forestry. Although this organisation has not been fixed yet, we are releasing the NCS and its methodologies for public consultation. Tree.ly focuses on developing high-quality, TÜV-verified CO₂ credits, empowering companies to invest in climate-resilient forestry across Europe. WKSS, founded in 2019 as a non-profit association, aims to sequester CO₂ in forests by reducing wood use and/or foregoing timber harvesting, thus removing CO₂ from the atmosphere long-term. With over 6,000 forest owners, WKSS advances biodiversity and sustainability through initiatives such as the Davos reforestation project and ISO-certified sustainable forestry practices. SILVACONSULT®, under the leadership of Dr. Hubertus Schmidke, brings decades of expertise in carbon forestry, remote sensing, and ecological management to global CO₂ projects. Together, NVC unites these efforts to create measurable impacts for a healthier and more sustainable planet.

Shaping the Future of Carbon Crediting with Integrity

The Nature Climate Standard (NCS) is transitioning to an independent, non-profit foundation to ensure transparency and integrity. Stakeholders are invited to provide feedback during the public consultation phase on the standard, methodologies, and proposed governance structure. This marks a key step toward applying for ICROA endorsement in 2025.
